In Part 1, a future world leader named Gog was introduced. Many have argued over who he is, where Magog is to be located, and where Meshech and Tubal are located. The two most often selected sites are Turkey and Russia. I believe the Russia connection is the most accurate.
“Son of man, set your face against Gog, of the land of Magog, the prince of Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal, and prophesy against him, – Ezekiel 38:2
Magog, Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal have long been thought to be connected with Russia. Even the famous American theologian Jonathon Edwards believed this. Perhaps the best known of those holding this view was Gesenius, who was known as the father of modern Hebrew Lexicography. Gesenius first published a work on Hebrew grammar in 1817 before turning his efforts on lexicography. He believed Magog, Meshech and Tubal were related to the ancient Scythian and Moschi who eventually migrated into the Russian Step region. Easton’s Bible Dictionary takes this view as well.
In this view, Meshech would be Moscow, the western capital of Russia and Tubal would be Tobalsk, long recognized as the eastern capital of Russia. It is interesting to note that Moscow is due north of Jerusalem.
“I will turn you around, put hooks into your jaws, and lead you out, with all your army, horses, and horsemen, all splendidly clothed, a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords. Persia, Ethiopia, and Libya are with them, all of them with shield and helmet; Gomer and all its troops; the house of Togarmah from the far (uttermost) north and all its troops—many people are with you. – Ezekiel 38:4-6
The table to the right displays modern day names of the nations named. While it is always dangerous to link Biblical prophesy to current events, it is very noticeable that all the countries named are presently politically joined together and are mostly Islamic. While much of what used to be the USSR was Muslim, currently Russia is still strongly linked with Iran, Syria and the other nations named. While Turkey has had good relations with Israel and the west in the past, recently it has become much more confrontational choosing to side with radical Islam in blaming Israel for all the problems in the Mid East. While Gomer is often placed above the Black Sea, it is known that Gomer migrated into the Danube River basin. As recent as WWI, Germany was known as “Gomerland”. Could recent anti-Semitic trends in Germany indicate a political shift against Israel and towards Islamic stands? German Prime Minister Merkel recently proclaimed “Islam is part of Germany”.
The map on the left shows present day locations of the nations named by Ezekiel. The question is, did he mean them to be nations at his time or in the future, when his prophesy is clearly set?
“Prepare yourself and be ready, you and all your companies that are gathered about you; and be a guard for them. – Ezekiel 38:7
If this prophesy is to happen any time soon, it is hard to imagine Turkey leading all these nations, but it is not hard to believe Russia could gather them all together, especially if Israel were to be the target! Russia already is the main supplier of weapons and technical support to them. At the time of this prophesy something else will be happening with Gog. God says to Gog –
I will turn you around, put hooks into your jaws, and lead you out, … – Ezekiel 38:4
If Russia is Gog, could this indicate that Russia is attacking somewhere else? Is it a reference to Russia’s obvious moves against Ukraine and other former Russian satellites?
Whoever Gog is, it is of prime importance to know that God is clearly against him. Another key thought is, we don’t want to be for someone that God is against! This does not mean we stop caring for the Russian or Turkish people but that we do not support the demonically inspired leadership of the one named Gog.
