We get so busy with everyday living or our desires to get more that we often do not take time for the really important details of life – like why are we here? What is our real purpose in life? The Scriptures say –
“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.” – Ephesians 2:10
God has a plan for each and every one of us but the devil and even our own desires distract us from accomplishing this plan. So, quite often God has to shake us up, just to get our attention. He can do this many ways; sickness, injury, financial problems, or natural signs or disasters. One way He uses to really get the attention of many at once is an earthquake. They were used many times during the first coming of Jesus –
“Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God.” – Matthew 27:54
“And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it.” – Matthew 28:2
“And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one’s bands were loosed.” – Acts 16:26
The earthquake in this last verse set the stage for the redemption of many who would have otherwise not listened to the message Paul had to deliver. Scriptures foretell the final use of earthquakes to warn of the soon return of Jesus –
“And the angel took the censer, and filled it with fire of the altar, and cast it into the earth: and there were voices, and thunderings, and lightnings, and an earthquake.“ – Revelation 8:5
Is this verse beginning now? Some will scoff and refuse to listen but the facts show that there have been a dramatic increase in earthquakes since 2000.
April 2016 – GEOLOGY – Seismic tension continues to mount in the volatile region of the planet known as the Ring of Fire, where more than 90% of the world’s earthquakes occur, and more than 81% of the largest magnitude earthquakes occur. The extraordinary and precipitous rise in the number of large magnitude earthquakes is both astounding and alarming. On average, only about fifteen 7+ magnitude earthquakes strike the planet each year. We’ve had 2 such earthquake in less than 72 hours. … The average rate of big earthquakes — those larger than magnitude 7 — has been 10 per year since 1979, the study reports. That rate rose to 12.5 per year starting in 1992, and then jumped to 16.7 per year starting in 2010 — a 65 percent increase compared to the rate since 1979. This increase accelerated in the first three months of 2014 to more than double the average since 1979, the researchers went on to report.
“The annual number of “great” earthquakes nearly tripled over the last decade, providing a reminder to Americans that unruptured faults like those in the northwest United States might be due for a Big One.” – NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt.
Between 2004 and 2014, 18 earthquakes with magnitudes of 8.0 or more rattled subduction zones around the globe. That’s an increase of 265 percent over the average rate of the previous century, which saw 71 great quakes, according to a report to the annual meeting of the Geological Society of America this week in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Earthquakes in the U.S. have had a startling increase in the last few years as shown in the graph above. Whenever someone mentions this fact in a Christian context, the standard reply if – ‘Oh, we just have better reporting now.’ But, for any who care to look at the numerous reports easily found on the internet that lie would be shown for what it is – an anti-God bias that does not want to admit that perhaps a judgment day is coming after all!
God speaks in many Scriptures about His shaking the earth –
“The LORD also shall roar out of Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the heavens and the earth shall shake: but the LORD will be the hope of his people, and the strength of the children of Israel.” – Joel 3:16
God is speaking and the earth is listening, even if man is not. Earthquakes and Tsunamis certainly get many peoples attention! The United States is especially being warned. We have enjoyed God’s ‘propitious smiles’ since our founding, as George Washington proclaimed. But, we are stepping out from under His protection by our rebellion and denial of His ways. Earthquakes, strange ‘booms’, tornadoes and hurricanes are echoing God’s warning. Scientists are now warning of huge coming shaking in Yellowstone and the New Madrid earthquake faults that will destroy the United States.
“And this word, Yet once more, signifieth the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that are made, that those things which cannot be shaken may remain. Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear:” – Hebrews 12:27,28
