Passover and the Lamb of God

As we approach the season of Passover (April 9-16), it would be good to ask – Who is our Passover? Our Passover is the Lamb of God.

“The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” – John 1:29

seal 5John the Apostle witnessed in the Revelation this Lamb come before the throne of God and take the 7 sealed scroll and open the seals which no one else could open and he heard the angels of heaven proclaim –

“Worthy is the Lamb who was slain To receive power and riches and wisdom, And strength and honor and glory and blessing!” – Rev. 5:11, 12

Worthy is the Lamb who was slain yet received power, honor, and blessing! That Lamb is Jesus the Messiah.

Daniel predicted the Messiah would be “cut off” (killed) shortly before the city of Jerusalem and the Temple would be destroyed.

“And after the sixty-two weeks Messiah shall be cut off, but not for Himself; And the people of the prince who is to come Shall destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end of it shall be with a flood, And till the end of the war desolations are determined.” – Dan. 9:26

We know that the Romans did destroy Jerusalem and the Temple in 70 AD and we also know that Jesus was the only historical Jewish person to be killed just before that event. In fact, Jesus was on the cross dying at the exact time the sacrifice Passover lamb was being offered in the Temple. Jesus was and is the Lamb which God provided.

Years before, Abraham took Isaac, his only son, to Mount Moriah to sacrifice and when Isaac asked Abraham where the lamb was for the sacrifice,  Abraham answered –

“And Abraham said, “My son, God will provide for Himself the lamb for a burnt offering.” So the two of them went together.” – Gen. 22:8

And God did provide the Lamb – His only Son. As the blood of the Passover lamb protected them from the destroyer in Egypt, so the blood of Jesus protects us from the curse of sin, which is death.

“But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.” – 1 John 1:7

“In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace” – Eph. 1:7

Down through the centuries this message has gone out to the Gentiles, as His word declares –

“Indeed He says, ‘It is too small a thing that You should be My Servant To raise up the tribes of Jacob, And to restore the preserved ones of Israel; I will also give You as a light to the Gentiles, That You should be My salvation to the ends of the earth.’ ” – Isa, 49:6

As He has been a Light to the Gentiles, so He will also raise up the tribes of Jacob. In fact, over 500,000 Jewish people have now come to believe in Jesus as their Messiah.

This April 9th as you remember Passover, be alert and in prayer because there may not be many more Passovers before the Lord returns. As we see the Gospel of the kingdom being preached in many Gentile lands; China, Iran, Russia, Indonesia, Africa, the Americas, India and more, now it is coming back home to Israel. And Jesus told us –

“And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come.” – Matt. 24:14
