I know this thought is foreign to most Americans and to most who live in western societies but, this world is not our home.
“Beloved, I beg you as sojourners and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul,” – 1 Pet. 2:11
“For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ,” – Phil. 3:20
When Jesus came to earth the first time, He came preaching the Gospel of the Kingdom not the Gospel of this world. Continue reading
Pilgrims Covenant with God
Friends, we are in deep trouble in the United States as well as other countries. We have left our covenant relationship with the God of the Bible. The Pilgrims and the Puritans, our original founders believed in a covenant with God.
“The Puritans saw Israel in the OT as a pattern for their social covenant with God. Like Israel, they believed that if they, as a people, kept their part of the covenant, which was to walk uprightly and make His name known, they would be blessed. If, on the other hand, they lost their sense of purpose and began to live selfish and sinful lives, they would suffer God’s wrath because of their rejection of the covenant. During the voyage to New England, Winthrop warned,
‘Now if the Lord shall please to bear us, and bring us in peace to the place we desire, then hath He verified this Covenant and sealed our commission . . . but if we fail to perform the terms of the Covenant, we shall perish out the land we are crossing the sea to possess.’
This sense of social responsibility to God is the reason the Puritans tended to hold one another accountable. They pointed out that since communities and nations cannot be rewarded in the next world, they must necessarily be rewarded in this one, according to their deeds. The sin of one or a few could, therefore, bring down God’s judgment on the entire community. This is also the reason that laws were passed outlawing adultery, fornication, profanity, drunkenness and Sabbath breaking.”
Whether it happened December 25th or some time in August is of little consequence, the fact is – IT HAPPENED! The baby Jesus was born in a manger in Bethlehem some 2000 years ago. It is the beginning of the Gospel message we Christians proclaim. There is a God and He enters human history and He has moral standards He expect man to follow. It took a supernatural visit to convince Joseph that Mary had not violated this moral code. Jesus, the Son of God, had to be born into a family, a man and a woman joined together in marriage. King David asked a question that we need to ask again –
“If the foundations are destroyed, What can the righteous do?” – Ps. 11:3
In a time of attack upon our Republic from Socialists, Communists, and Progressives, we need to revisit our foundation principles. We have existed for over 200 years as a nation but, what was the foundation that allowed this? One of the earliest documents of those who originally came to found this country was written by John Winthrop, Pilgrim –
“We are a company,” he said, “… professing ourselves fellow members in Christ …. The end is to improve our lives and do more service to the Lord …. that ourselves and our posterity may be better preserved from the common corruptions in this world . … We must love brotherly without dissimulation; we must love one another with pure heart fervently. We shall be as a City upon a Hill, the eyes of all the people upon us.” – A Model of Christian Charity, John Winthrop
